Ask The Experts About Virtual Therapist

Donald asks…
Is technology making our children into uncaring adults not able to empathize with others?
I am worried about my grandson. He is 9 1/2 yrs old. He doesn’t seem to have much feeling for anyone even his parents. He uses people and is always out for his selfish gain. We have all tried to tell him that he needs to care about others and obey his parents but he does what he wants and there is no punishment they can do that seems to bother him. He has always played a lot of video games. Do you think that interacting so much with virtual reality people has made him callouse to real people’s feelings and what’s right and wrong?
PS – He has been to many psychiatrists and therapists and he doesn’t have autism.
Grover says … – lol that is a good question. I put it under the R & S forum because all of my friends are hear and I knew I’d get the most thought out answers here.
Ladytron – Thanks for answering. We have brought him to professionals. The only diagnosis they could give him was bipolar which we didn’t agree with at all and neither did his current pyschiatrist. I forgot to mention his father is a real jerk and has affected him very negatively.
Bart M – Of course. Everyone in the family has tried to talk to him at various times. He kind of zones out. He doesn’t say much and doesn’t seem too interested in the whole thing.
Caboose – Yes. He’s been going to therapists for about 3 years now. They give my daughter and son-in-law suggestions that they have already tried.
RW – No. They interact with him a lot and my daughter is always letting him have friends over the house. But usually the only reason he will go to their house is if they have some new game he wants to play.
ashmarie321 *SFCU* – He does have father issues. His father hasn’t been in his life for several years. My father put the fear of God in me, too. I wouldn’t have dreamed of behaving like he does either.

I know one thing – Im sick of people blaming this behavior on video games… I play video games all the time, and I am a very compassionate and caring individual.
When I was a kid, we used to run around with BB guns and play “war” or cowboys and indians. WE made believe that we were being violent and killing each other. Now, kids do it in a video game… I dont see how the video game is to blame…
