Ask The Experts About Virtual Therapy

Charles asks…

18 years old, do i have a mental disorder?

Been depressed since i was 13 when my parents first separated, i have no motivation to do anything in life including finishing school, i am incredibly lazy have high social anxiety and find it nearly impossible to associate with others. I haven’t talked to my friends since elementary school as I’ve been going to an alternative school since 8th grade. I have no confidence even though I’m a decent looking guy. I don’t know what I’m going to do anymore i sit at home all day and play on the computer, it is a virtual reality for me in which i don’t have to deal with the stress of reality. I would of committed suicide long ago if i weren’t such a chicken shit. I have no reason to continue living yet i do. What do i do, what can i do? I don’t think getting therapy would help at all as i hear it’s quite useless that and my father would never pay for me to get it.

Easy bro. Glad I saw this. Look at your calendar. Exactly a year ago I was where you are now. I was in college skipping every class and not leaving my bed even to eat. I got some treatment and I was happier than I’d been in a long time. Though I had to switch medications because of a bipolar diagnosis and am going through a rough patch, life still has a lot to offer.

Talk to your parents and tell them whats going on. If its hard to talk about and you don’t want to go into detail just let them know that you’re not feeling well and you think you might need some help. From there you’ll be referred to a psychiatrist who can diagnose and treat you.

While you might feel “depressed” you may not actually have depression. If all goes well you’ll be feeling better in just a few weeks.
